Tecnifibre Razor Soft String Review
Developed for ATP sensation Daniil Medvedev, Razor Soft builds upon the formula of Tecnifibre's Razor Code, a firm and low-powered co-poly that delivers maximum control on full swings. What sets Razor Soft apart is a unique polyurethane additive, which is designed to boost comfort without compromising the surgical control and connected feel that advanced players crave. Judging from the scores and comments of our playtesters, the design succeeds, and it helped earn Razor Soft outstanding scores for feel and control. Razor Soft also had excellent playability duration — a well-known weakness of co-poly monofilaments. Although it does not rank among the softest co-polys we've reviewed, this string's great feel and pocketing serve as a reminder of how far polyester monofilaments have come. It also suggests that one of the game's most iconic purveyors of multifilament strings knows a thing or two about polyester as well.

Breakdown SummaryBreakdown
Control: 8.9
With its ultra-predictable response on full swings, Razor Soft received an excellent score for control. What separates it from many of its competitors is the fact that it achieves this control without feeling overly stiff or unresponsive on off-center impact or slower strokes. In fact, Chris found enough pop with this string to keep the ball deep and impose his will. He said, "I liked the response of Razor Soft. The string had enough control to let me swing aggressively and go for the corners of the court. I felt like there was enough power to help me push my opponents off the baseline and also to put my shots away. I think Razor Soft is very much a control string, even though it gave me easier access to depth compared to other Tecnifibre strings like Razor Code or Ice Code. Compared to those strings, it felt like I was getting more dwell time, which resulted in a higher launch angle and more depth rather than noticeably more pace."

Like Chris, Michelle was impressed by Razor Soft's control, but she also found just enough power to finish points. She explained, "I got to playtest this string while watching Medvedev win some tournaments and listening to him comment on how the playability of the string was helping him achieve success. So let's just say I was slightly influenced and hyped to be using the same stuff he's transitioned into for 2023. With that being said, I was a bit misled by the name and was worried that it might be too soft and lively for my game. Luckily for me, the string had great control, but it also gave me just enough power to put balls away. Throughout the playtest, I felt very connected to my shots and really enjoyed how easily I could place the ball."
Spin: 8.2
With its round shape, Razor Soft doesn't have the grippy edges of a shaped poly like Tecnifibre's 4S, but it still proved quite spin-friendly. In fact, Chris was impressed by the range of trajectories and angles that Razor Soft enabled. He said, "I was very happy with the amount of spin I could generate with Razor Soft. My slice shots had some nice bite to them, and I felt dialed in on the amount of spin I was getting on the ball. On topspin shots, I felt in control when I hit angles and lobs, with a good sense of the loop I was going to get from the spin. The extra dwell time also gave me more depth and directional feel with my spin shots, which made it easier to predict the landing point of angles and lobs."
"I liked the shape I was getting on my shots since I was getting enough spin to dip or curve the ball to my desired targets."
"I found good spin from this string, but I don't think it was necessarily the defining feature," said Michelle, who ultimately found enough spin to bring the ball down on schedule. "I am not a player who demands massive spin, but I can appreciate it when it is there. With Razor Soft, I was confident that I could swing aggressively and get the ball to drop inside the lines."
Feel: 9.1
Polyester monofilaments are firm by design, which is why they sometimes feel uncomfortable and dead, especially on off-center impact. To address this issue, Tecnifibre injects a flexible polyurethane additive into the core of Razor Soft. The result, for Chris, is a great-feeling co-poly that provides exceptional command over the ball. He said, "My favorite part of hitting with Razor Soft was the feel at contact. I got the sense the stringbed was pocketing the ball nicely. My touch volleys were working well, and I was very happy with the feel I had for those shots. From the baseline, I found the feel to be controlled, with a sense that the ball was sitting long enough on the strings to allow me to dictate what I wanted to do with my shot."

For Michelle, this string felt great across several different tensions and racquets. She described, "Despite its name, I found a firm feel from Razor Soft, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. It wasn't super plush, but it pocketed the ball well. I liked the feel and was able to test it at several tensions in a few different racquets, and I loved what it had to offer when strung above and below 55 pounds in firm frames."
Playability Duration: 8
In addition to its outstanding control and feel, Razor Soft also has impressive playability duration for a poly. For Michelle, Razor Soft definitely went the distance. She said, "I had this string in at least three racquets of mine all strung at various times during the playtest. I found I could go from each frame and consistently enjoy what the string had to offer. After three weeks, it did drop off a bit and lost some of its control. That was interesting to note because I know Daniil isn't super specific about getting all of his frames restrung before matches, and now I can see why."
"Even after three weeks, Razor Soft seemed to be holding its playability."
"Razor Soft lasted well for me in both open and dense string patterns," added Chris. "This is not a string I'm going to break, so I was able to get a solid three weeks of hitting on it before I felt ready for a restring. The two-week mark is my barometer for playability duration, and Razor Soft passed that with no issues. The surface of the string also held up well, and I was happy with the spin I was getting right up until I cut it out."

Why not try what one of the best players on the ATP uses? Razor Soft is a great option for intermediate to advanced players looking for a comfortably firm string with good control that doesn’t feel too dead. Tecnifibre Razor Soft’s good blend of control, comfort, power and spin reminds me a bit of Yonex Poly Tour Pro and Head Lynx Tour. All of those strings have been fun for me to try at different tensions in different frames.
Good control, nice feel, great pocketing, durable.
While it's softer than some other Tecnifibre strings, I'm not sure the name Razor Soft conveys what to expect when it gets strung up in your racquet.

Razor Soft is a great option for the seasoned co-poly player looking for a very consistent playing string that offers a nice blend of spin, control and power. Compared to all of the other Tecnifibre co-polys I've hit (which is all of them), Razor Soft has the most forgiving feel and a slightly higher launch on topspin shots. Compared to competing brands, I'd say the playability is similar to Solinco Hyper-G and Head Lynx Tour, which are two of my favorite strings.
I like everything about Razor Soft, and it is by far my favorite co-poly from Tecnifibre. The spin, control and feel are all exactly to my liking.
None. Razor Soft is now a go-to string for me.
