Solinco Hyper-G Round String Review
With the 2024 launch of Hyper-G Round, Solinco adds another member to its family of Hyper-G co-polys. Although it lacks the shaped profile of the standard (and wildly popular) Hyper-G, it shares the same material compound and manufacturing processes, which helps explain why our playtesters, both longtime users of Hyper-G, were so impressed by its performance. In addition to its extremely precise and predictable trajectory on full cuts, Hyper-G Round delivered exceptional feel at impact, a fact that sets it apart from an earlier generation of traditional polys. Another standout feature was how long Hyper-G Round stayed fresh and playable. Despite the inevitable tension loss that every string undergoes, this co-poly's surgical control and exceptional feel never wavered. While our playtesters noted slightly less bite and spin potential compared to the original (shaped) Hyper-G, neither tester had problems making adjustments and hitting targets. Ultimately, for experienced players who want a round co-poly with laser-like precision and outstanding feel, Hyper-G Round will not disappoint.

Breakdown
Control: 8.2
With its firm monofilament construction, Hyper-G Round is designed to give big hitters pinpoint control on their most powerful strokes. According to our playtesters, it achieved this control without ever feeling dead or unresponsive on slower strokes or off-center impact. It also came with a slightly truer exit angle and more linear trajectory than the average shaped poly, making it perfect for Michelle, who likes driving the ball through the court. She said, "This string is just what I like — loads of control without feeling limited in terms of power. Since Hyper-G is my string of choice, this was an easy and obvious string for my game. I felt super confident taking big whacks at the ball. I tried Hyper-G Round in many racquets that I love, from my Wilson Pro Staff RF97 to the Babolat Pure Drive Tour, and in some of the Solinco racquets I'm lusting over, and the playability was consistent no matter the frame it was in. I even had a chance to hybrid it with standard Hyper-G and loved that experience as well!"
"Since I have flatter mechanics and prefer to hit through my opponent rather than spin them off the court, Hyper-G Round made me feel super dialed in when attempting to penetrate the court."
Finding a tad more power than he did with the standard Hyper-G, Troy loved how predictable and consistent this co-poly played. He said, "The first thing I noticed is that Hyper-G Round felt a bit more elastic, or lively, in comparison to the regular Solinco Hyper-G. It also had impressive pocketing for a co-poly. During my first few hitting sessions, I felt like I was getting a bit more zip on the ball than I expected; having played so much with Hyper-G, Confidential and Tour Bite over the years, I was using those as my reference points. I didn't really have an issue with the power or control level during my first go around, but I did feel like I could bump up the tension by a couple of pounds to get the slightly firmer, crisper feel that I was seeking. Once I dialed in the tension and tried a bunch of different gauges, from 16 (1.30) all the way to 18 (1.15), I was able to appreciate the overall predictability and consistent response this string delivered. I make the biggest judgment on my polys when hitting my groundstrokes, where I spend most of my time hitting during a point, and also most of my time practicing and just rallying for fun. With a bit of adjusting and dialing in the gauge and tension to match the racquet I was playing with (a few re-strings throughout the test), I found the trust and reliability I look for in a co-poly string. So all in all, it's a good option for me in terms of control and power level."
Spin: 7.2
Although Hyper-G Round lacks the sharp bite of a shaped poly, it compensates partially with its robust snapback and its capacity to accommodate explosive stroke speeds, two crucial ingredients for spin generation. According to Troy, while Hyper-G Round isn't quite as spin friendly as Solinco's shaped polys, it still delivers plenty of ball rotation, especially the thinner gauges. He said, "In the overall spectrum of poly strings, the spin potential of Hyper-G Round is a little higher than average. For those players who are seeking a string with extra bite on the ball, one that really helps accentuate spin, I would likely steer them toward shaped strings like the regular Hyper-G, Tour Bite or Confidential. With that being said, I still found that with proper mechanics I could generate plenty of spin and hit some big penetrating shots with Hyper-G Round. I noticed a slight difference in the grab of the ball and the resulting launch angle compared to regular Hyper-G, or say a string like Volkl Cyclone, which has sharp edges, but it was something I could easily adjust to. Some of the thinner gauges helped with spin potential, especially in the 18x20 Solinco Whiteout 305 XTD that I used during the test. The 17 gauge (1.20) seemed to be my favorite no matter which racquet I put the string in, and it provided a nice feel along with the spin."

Finding less success than Troy, Michelle encountered a few situations where this round poly lacked sufficient bite. She explained, "The spin was adequate for the most part, but there were times when I could have used more bite. I noticed this mainly when I was defending and reaching for something below the net and could have just used a tiny bit more bite to bring the ball down. But honestly, for my game this was hardly an issue. I have the long, linear stroke style that doesn't crave much bite, so I enjoyed keeping the ball low and flirting with net clearance. As mentioned above, when hybriding it with standard Hyper-G, I found that extra bite and really had no issues with spin."
Feel: 8.2
For our playtesters, the feel of Hyper-G Round proved excellent. As a longtime fan of the standard Hyper-G, it's no surprise that Michelle felt right at home with this round variant. She said, "It feels like Hyper-G — go figure! This is a Goldilocks string for me; it isn't super soft, but it isn't uncomfortable or harsh either. The feel at impact is exceptional. If anything, it might pocket a bit better than standard Hyper-G. For anyone who hasn't hit Hyper-G before, I would describe this as a comfortably firm string. It doesn't feel mushy at all in my stringbed, no matter the racquet or the setup."
"Hyper-G Round felt slightly softer than regular Hyper-G, with a bit more pocketing and elasticity, but not quite as soft as Hyper-G Soft."
Although he didn't find it quite as crisp as his go-to string (the regular, shaped version of Hyper-G), Troy ultimately warmed up to the feel of Hyper-G Round. He said, "When it came to the feel of the string, it definitely responded like a consistent and control-oriented poly should. I probably have a slight bias toward regular Hyper-G since it has been my go-to for many years, and I prefer that slightly firmer, crisper feel that it provides. That said, the more I became accustomed to this round version through repeated play, the better it felt. I found the overall comfort to be about average for a co-poly."
Playability Duration: 8.1
Like all strings, Hyper-G Round loses tension over time, which usually leads to noticeable changes in how it feels and plays. To this string's credit, Michelle found that it held its original feel and playing features remarkably well over time. She said, "I think one of the reasons I love Hyper-G so much is because of how consistently it plays through use, and Hyper-G Round was no different. It plays amazingly off the stringer, but two weeks into the playtest I was still happy with the playability and found it retained its properties, which kept me from getting frustrated and feeling disconnected from the string."

"Like I have found with most Solinco co-poly strings that I have tried, the tension maintenance and playability duration were better than average," added Troy. "Of the Solinco strings, Hyper-G and Confidential are likely the best for tension maintenance and playability duration. Tour Bite is pretty firm, but I find that it drops off a bit more and gets a little springy over time. With Hyper-G Round, the playability was pretty good throughout the test, but I found it to open up and feel a little more lively toward the end of the test, more so than Hyper-G. As I mentioned in the power/control section, I would go up a pound or two compared to what I string Hyper-G at. I also experimented with the pre-stretch function on our electronic stringing machine. I tried it with a 5-percent pre-stretch, and that seemed to take some of that initial power out of the string. There was a slightly deader feel in the beginning, and it was pretty consistent throughout the 10 to 15 hours of play."

Troy
I recommend Hyper-G Round to seasoned poly players seeking control and a consistent response from their stringbed. This string is a good option for heavy hitters and players who hit with a lot of spin. However, if the player needs a little extra bite on the ball and wants to maximize topspin, I would recommend regular Hyper-G or Tour Bite instead. If the player seeks control, plays a variety of shots and has a tendency to drive through the ball with a flatter stroke, Hyper-G Round could be an even better option than regular Hyper-G. I also recommend this string to players who hybrid with a multifilament, synthetic gut or natural gut, because this is a nice complement to those softer types of strings. The smooth and round profile makes for less friction, less notching and easier snapback. As far as the new poly player, I would probably steer them toward a softer option, like Solinco Tour Bite Soft or Hyper-G Soft.
The control level and consistent response that Hyper-G Round provides makes me feel confident when playing aggressively. I played a majority of this playtest with the Solinco Whiteout 305 XTD 18x20, and I really liked how well the thinner gauges of this string (17/1.20 and 18/1.15) complemented that 18x20 string pattern.
There's not a whole lot to complain about with this string, though I still consider the regular Hyper-G my favorite. Not to say that this string is worse or a whole lot different from Hyper-G, but I have used it for so many years, and I like its shape and the edges, especially when I hit with a lot of topspin. I had to adjust tension slightly to get the control and feel I wanted with Hyper-G Round, but other than that, I was pleased with how this string worked for my game.

Anyone who already loves Hyper-G needs to try this Round version, and anyone who uses poly and is looking for confidence and control in a string should try it out! I don't know if players who love to hit with all the spin and RPMs will lean into this string as much as flatter hitters, but I also think it is great to try in a hybrid with a grippier poly. It is such a fun string to hybrid with as well! I would compare it to Tecnifibre Ice Code and also Luxilon Savage, which is one of my favorite no-frills does-everything-great sort of string!
This string pairs nearly perfectly with my game. It offers me the control I crave when hitting out and helps me craft points the way I enjoy — with the confidence to step up and penetrate the court. Great tension maintenance and playability after week one.
I'd be lying if I said it has the same spin potential as standard Hyper-G, but I think the player this string suits best wouldn't need that.
